Wordplay Cafe: Seven Deadly Sins

July 13, 2017

Amazingly talented local artists, music and beats to create the vibe, and a dreamy ambience. Sounds great, right? These are all the ingredients of Wordplay Cafe, a spoken word/open mic event presented by Mesa Arts Center as part of The Word Project. Sounds familiar, right? That’s because Creative Catalysts partnered with The Word Project earlier this summer to pilot two of these events.

We’re getting even more involved in these magical open-mic nights. A series of WordPlay Cafes kicks off at Volstead Public House on August 10. Each of seven evenings in the series is themed with one of the seven deadly sins (pride, envy, sloth, gluttony, greed, anger, and lust). Best part? Each of these nights starts with an hour-long workshop designed to provide you with guidance and techniques for spoken word, poetry and storytelling, regardless of your current comfort level. By the time you’re through, you’ll be itching to get on the mic and share your work. If you’ve even thought about doing this, it’s time to embrace all the feels and get behind the mic!

Attend all seven workshops, and you’ll probably find yourself with a pretty solid piece of work (or multiple pieces!) that you feel comfortable performing. The workshops will also be easy to drop into here and there,, so if you can’t attend all or if one of them seems more appealing than another, you are still welcomed and encouraged to join. Following these seven themed shows, we will host a Story Slam, the winners of which will then be featured in our spark! After Dark and The Word Project show in April. ← more details to come on this because you won’t want to miss it, whether you’re a participating artist, a lover of all things art, or a lady dressed like a hotdog for no reason whatsoever.

Be there for the Wordplay Cafe kickoff on August 10th at Volstead Public House, 105 W. Main Street. Be sure to follow the Creative Catalysts Facebook page for more updates on details, themes, times, and general all around good feelings.
